Cycling in Santa Fe
Best season: April–October
Santa Fe packs an unusual amount of riding into America’s oldest capital city. The signature outing is the Santa Fe Rail-Trail, which rolls roughly 17 miles from Railyard Park in the middle of town to the tiny railroad outpost of Lamy — paved for the first four miles to Rabbit Road, then hard-packed gravel with real climbs, so grab a hybrid, gravel bike, or hardtail rather than a cruiser if you’re going the distance.
In town, the riding is short, scenic, and best done slowly: the Plaza, gallery-lined Canyon Road, and the Railyard district are all within an easy pedal of each other, and foothill singletrack like the Dale Ball network waits just above the city for mountain bikers. Remember you’re starting at about 7,000 feet — the air is thin, the sun is strong, and summer afternoons can bring fast-moving monsoon thunderstorms.
Hotel bikes are a genuine amenity here rather than an afterthought. The Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi keeps custom house bicycles for guests just off the Plaza, the Four Seasons Rancho Encantado stocks Orbea mountain bikes at its Adventure Center in the Tesuque foothills, and the Inn & Spa at Loretto hosts an on-site e-bike tour and rental desk. Downtown, Mellow Velo and the Railyard branch of Routes Bicycle Rentals cover everything from city bikes to high-end full-suspension rigs.
Spring through fall is prime; the rail trail’s gravel miles drain slowly after storms, so give them a day to dry. E-bikes take the sting out of the altitude if you’re arriving from sea level.
