Cycling in Sausalito

Best season: April–October

Sausalito is the payoff at the far side of the Bay Area’s most famous ride: pedal from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and down into Sausalito, then catch the ferry back with your bike. The waterfront around Bridgeway is packed with rental outfits, and the flat, paved bay-front paths past the houseboat communities make it approachable for casual riders as well as roadies heading north into the Marin Headlands.

For an overnight, The Inn Above Tide sits directly over the water a minute from the ferry landing and offers complimentary loaner bicycles to guests. Rentals are easy to find in the village: Sausalito Bike Rentals, one block from the ferry, stocks e-bikes, cruisers, tandems, road and mountain bikes and will deliver to the ferry landing, while Vacation Bike Rentals delivers e-bikes to local hotels and vacation homes.

The riding is best from spring through fall when Bay fog burns off by midday; summer weekends draw heavy tourist traffic on the bridge path. Verify exact rental prices, delivery fees and the inn’s bike-loaner terms directly, as these change seasonally.

With the long-running Sausalito Art Festival on hiatus, the waterfront’s steadiest annual party is the Sausalito Herring Festival each April, a food-and-music celebration of the bay’s herring run — a fitting finish for riders who cross the Golden Gate Bridge and coast into town.
