Cycling in Savannah

Best season: March–May, October–November

Savannah was built for slow bikes. The Historic District’s grid of 20-plus oak-canopied squares, Forsyth Park, Jones Street, and the riverfront is flat, shady, and compact — the kind of place where a cruiser with a basket beats a car every time. Several downtown streets carry bike lanes, and the tour operators ride the district daily, so drivers are used to seeing wheels.

Hotels lean into it. The Perry Lane Hotel folds a daily one-hour bicycle rental into its amenity fee, steps from Chippewa Square; the riverfront Alida reportedly lends Alida bikes with helmets and locks; and the Thompson Savannah’s destination fee is said to include house bikes — confirm terms at the Marriott and Hyatt properties by phone, since only Perry Lane publishes its program. Independent shops fill every gap: Savannah On Wheels sends each rental out with a helmet, lock, and marked route map, and Perry Rubber Bike Shop rents from the corner of Bull Street and Perry Lane.

Guided rides are a genuine strength — Savannah On Wheels’ ~2-hour historic tour runs $39 (also bookable on Viator with a keep-the-bike option), and Savannah Bike Tours adds e-bike, Tybee Island, and evening haunted rides with trikes available for accessibility.

For a longer spin, the McQueen’s Island Trail follows the old Savannah–Tybee rail bed about six crushed-stone miles along the river — but it’s been repeatedly storm-damaged and is under restoration in 2026, so check current conditions before planning on it. In town, spring and late fall are the sweet spots; summer riding means early starts and lots of water.
