Cycling in Scottsdale
Best season: October–April
Scottsdale turned a flood-control channel into one of the best easy urban rides in America. The Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt runs 11 miles through the heart of the city as a car-free multiuse path with more than two dozen underpasses and bridges — you can ride from the Old Town area up through lakes, parks and golf greenery to McCormick Ranch without stopping for a single traffic light.
This is the rare destination where the hotel bike is a genuine amenity culture. A boutique inn near Old Town keeps a fleet of British Pashley bicycles for guests, a Curio Collection hotel in the Entertainment District is reported to offer complimentary bikes, and an all-suite property sits directly on the Greenbelt with its own onsite rentals — you roll off the property and onto the path.
If your hotel doesn’t lend bikes, rentals are cheap and everywhere: beach cruisers and hybrids by the hour or day from Old Town-area shops, and e-bikes in McCormick Ranch positioned exactly for the Greenbelt’s shady miles. Guided e-bike tours from about $39 cover Old Town and 15–20 miles of the surrounding paths if you’d rather follow a local.
Cooler months (October–April) are the season — that’s also peak hotel pricing, so book early around spring training. In summer, do as locals do: ride the Greenbelt at dawn, then be poolside by ten.
