Cycling in Snowshoe

Best season: Late May–early October

Snowshoe Mountain is where the East Coast goes to ride real downhill. Perched atop Cheat Mountain in West Virginia’s Allegheny Highlands, the Snowshoe Bike Park stacks 40-plus lift-served trails and roughly 1,500 feet of vertical into two very different zones. The Basin, served by the Ballhooter high-speed quad, is machine-built flow and progression terrain where you learn to let go of the brakes; the Western Territory, off the Cupp Run lift, is billed as the only true expert pitch in the Mid-Atlantic — raw, steep, rock-gardened single-black-diamond descents like Cupp Run and Shay’s Revenge. Snowshoe earned a Silver-level IMBA Ride Center designation and has hosted the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, so the pedigree is not marketing fluff.

The whole operation is self-contained at the top of the mountain, which makes logistics simple. The resort’s Mountain Adventure Center — the on-site rental shop tucked into the lower level of the Allegheny Springs lodge — rents Trek downhill and enduro full-suspension bikes, and each rental comes with the full-face helmet, chest, arm, knee, and shin armor that park riding demands. Bike-park lift tickets are sold separately from the rental, so budget for both, and reserve bikes ahead in peak summer.

Staying in the Village puts you steps from the lift, the rental center, and the bike-park lessons that run daily for first-timers and progressing riders. The season runs from roughly late May into early October, with midsummer offering full seven-day operation.
