Solvang sits at the hub of the Santa Ynez Valley, some of Southern California’s best road cycling: quiet vineyard lanes, rolling ranch country and climbs like Happy Canyon and Foxen Canyon, with wineries at nearly every turn. The mild coastal-valley climate makes it a genuine year-round destination, and the flat streets of the village itself are easy cruising.
For a bike-friendly base, Alisal Ranch runs a courtesy bike program: all guests can check out Specialized Rock Hopper bikes at no charge during the day, helmet and lock included, straight from the front desk (1054 Alisal Road). It’s the standout bike-friendly stay in the valley.
To rent for the road, Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling (launching from SB Bike Tours in nearby Ballard) rents premium carbon road and gravel bikes at $110/day, hybrids at $55 and e-bikes at $90, all with helmet, repair kit and route maps. Dr. J’s Bicycle Shop in Buellton offers the valley’s largest rental selection with an on-staff bike fitter, and Wheel Fun Rentals in Solvang handles cruisers, surreys, tandems and e-bikes for casual village riding. The same outfit also runs fully guided wine-country tours with vineyard lunches.
Solvang honors its Danish roots each September at Solvang Danish Days, a heritage festival of aebleskiver, parades, and folk dancing set among the same rolling Santa Ynez Valley roads that draw road cyclists year-round.
