Cycling in South Maui (Kīhei)

South Maui — Kīhei, Wailea, and Mākena — is the island’s warm, dry, easy-riding side. The spine is South Kīhei Road, one of Maui’s most bike-friendly stretches: flat and sunny, running past a string of beaches (Kamaole I–III, Kalama Park, and the mellow beginner surf at Cove Park). It’s cruiser country — roll north toward North Kīhei and Māʻalaea, or south onto the paved Wailea path that threads the resorts, oceanfront restaurants, and beaches on toward Mākena, Turtle Town, and the ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu lava fields.
You don’t have to bring a bike. A Kīhei beachfront hotel lends guests complimentary cruisers from the pool desk, and a Wailea resort includes beach cruisers in its resort fee. If you’d rather ride something faster, Kīhei’s shops rent everything from Trek road bikes to e-bikes, and there are counters up and down South Kīhei Road — plus island-wide delivery if you’d rather have a bike dropped at your condo.
It rides year-round; go in the morning before the afternoon trade winds pick up, and carry water — South Maui is hot and low on shade.
The marquee Haleakalā sunrise-descent tours start Upcountry in East Maui, a drive from here — South Maui riding is the flat, breezy coast.
In February, Kīhei marks humpback season with the Maui Whale Festival, a month of Pacific Whale Foundation events including a Kalama Park celebration and a parade down flat, bike-friendly South Kīhei Road.
