Cycling in Spearfish
Best season: May–October (groomed-trail fat biking in winter)
Spearfish sits at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon, the Northern Black Hills’ signature gorge, and the riding here skews toward dirt: miles of mountain-bike trails run along Spearfish Creek and into the Black Hills National Forest, with the Old Baldy and Crow Peak loops as the classic named rides. It’s the same terrain that hosts the Dakota Five-0, a 50-mile mountain-bike race — so strong riders have plenty to chew on, while the creekside canyon riding stays approachable.
You don’t have to haul a bike out here. Spearfish Canyon Lodge, at Savoy deep in the canyon, rents fat bikes from its own on-site rental center, and in town Two Wheeler Dealer on Main Street rents everything from hardtails and fat bikes to Specialized e-bikes with helmet and lock included. For an easy town spin, there’s an $8-an-hour bike-share station at Spearfish City Park.
Spearfish also works as a base for the Black Hills’ marquee rail-trail: the 109-mile George S. Mickelson Trail starts a short drive away in Deadwood, where rental-and-shuttle outfitters cover the logistics.
Summer trail riding runs roughly May through October; in winter the lodge’s fat bikes move onto groomed snow trails, so the canyon genuinely rides year-round. Call ahead for canyon rentals — the lodge is 30–40 minutes from town and fleet sizes are limited.
