Cycling in Spokane

Best season: April–October

Spokane’s cycling spine is the Spokane River Centennial Trail, a 37.5-mile paved path that follows the river from Nine Mile Falls through downtown to the Idaho line — where it keeps going as the North Idaho Centennial Trail toward Coeur d’Alene. The downtown stretch is the showpiece: Riverfront Park’s 100 acres, the roar of Upper Spokane Falls, and the Great Northern Clock Tower all sit right on the route.

This is flat, paved, family-friendly riding through the city core, with bigger days available west of town where the trail threads Riverside State Park’s 9,100 acres of ponderosa-pine river canyon. Gravel and mountain riders will find plenty in the park’s dirt network.

Getting a bike is unusually easy here. Two riverfront hotels lend bikes to guests — one includes the first four hours free with helmets and locks, the other has offered complimentary two-hour rentals — and a downtown shop sits directly on the trail with daily rentals. Lime’s WheelShare e-bikes are scattered citywide for short hops, and a local operator runs guided e-bike tours of the parks and river paths.

April through October is the season; summer is prime. If you’re on a hotel loaner, confirm the bike program when you book — fleets are small and first-come in peak months.
