Cycling in St. Charles

Best season: April-November

St. Charles marks the eastern end of the Katy Trail State Park, a 240-mile crushed-limestone rail-trail that runs to Clinton. The St. Charles trailhead sits at Frontier Park along the Missouri River, a short roll from the 19th-century storefronts of historic Main Street and the Frenchtown district. Riders use the town as a launch point for day loops or as day one of a cross-state tour, and the surrounding countryside opens into Missouri wine country toward Defiance and Augusta.

For gear and logistics, the Bike Stop Cafe at 701 S Riverside Drive sits right on the riverfront within view of the trail, renting standard, gravel and e-bikes by the hour, day or week and running daily 8am shuttles and luggage transfers anywhere along the Katy Trail. Katy Bike Rental & Shuttle also serves the St. Charles trailhead, with pickups from the long-term parking lot behind Country Inn & Suites on Main Street.

For lodging, Boone’s Lick Trail Inn and Country Inn & Suites both sit on South Main Street within a tenth of a mile of the trailhead; the inn keeps a locked bike shed and the Country Inn lets guests roll bikes into ground-floor rooms. The riding season runs roughly April through November, with spring and fall offering the mildest temperatures for long crushed-limestone miles.

Every August, Historic Main Street and riverfront Frontier Park fill up for the Festival of the Little Hills, a large arts-and-crafts fair steps from the eastern trailhead of the Katy Trail.
