Cycling in St. Petersburg
Best season: November–April (summer brings heat and afternoon thunderstorms)
St. Petersburg is where the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail begins: one of Florida’s landmark rail-trails, running some 35-plus flat, paved miles from downtown St. Pete north through Gulfport-adjacent neighborhoods and beach towns all the way to Tarpon Springs. You can ride an hour or make a full day of it, and the southern trailhead sits just blocks from the city’s museums and craft breweries.
Downtown adds its own network — the North Bay Trail rolls along the marina and waterfront parks past The Vinoy, and the Skyway Trail heads south toward the Sunshine Skyway. A favorite half-day alternative is riding out to Fort De Soto Park’s beaches from the west-side shops.
Logistics are unusually easy here. St Pete Biking rents hybrids and e-bikes from a shop literally on the Pinellas Trail (helmets and locks included), ABC Bicycles runs two Trek stores positioned for the trail’s east and west approaches, eBike Adventures delivers long-range e-bikes to trailheads, and the city’s Lime bike-share e-bikes cover spontaneous downtown hops. On the hotel side, The Vinoy offers e-bike rentals right on the waterfront, and out on the barrier island St. Pete Beach Suites is reported to lend guests free bicycles — call ahead to confirm the details.
Winter through spring is prime: dry, sunny, 70s. Summer riding works, but start early — the afternoon thunderstorm is practically a scheduled event.
