Cycling in Steamboat Springs
Best season: June–August (weekends into early October)
Steamboat Springs wears the “Bike Town, USA” badge, and its lift-served centerpiece is the Steamboat Bike Park on Mt. Werner. Nearly 2,200 vertical feet and a roughly 50-mile network of gravity-fed downhill flow and tech trails fan out below the summit, with multi-directional cross-country trails mixed in for riders who’d rather earn their turns. Access is unusually civilized: you load your bike onto the Steamboat Gondola or the newer Wild Blue Gondola and ride to trails that run from beginner-friendly flow to genuinely expert tech.
The bike park runs daily from early June through late August, then weekends into early October, on 9:30am-to-4pm lift hours. The resort’s Steamboat Sports Bike Shop, at the base in Steamboat Square, rents the tools for it — full-suspension downhill bikes for park laps and less-aggressive full-suspension trail bikes for everything else — and every downhill rental comes with a full-face helmet, shin and elbow pads, and gloves. Rates run in the $80s to low $100s per day, with multi-day discounts; call ahead to pin down the current bike-park package price.
Slopeside, the Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas sits right at the gondola base next to Christie Peak Express, with equipment storage and a short walk to the bike shop. Off the lifts, the Yampa Valley’s deep XC and gravel network is worth an extra day.
