Cycling in Stowe
Best season: June-October
Stowe packs an unusual range of riding into one valley. The car-free, paved Stowe Recreation Path runs 5.5 miles along the West Branch and connects to town, while the volunteer-built VMBA / Stowe Mountain Bike Club networks at Cady Hill Forest, Adams Camp, and Sterling Valley deliver flowy and technical singletrack. The Trapp Family Lodge maintains its own 2,600-acre network (roughly 8 miles of singletrack plus 20+ miles of double track) that ties into the broader trail system, and the surrounding class-4 roads and rail trails open up gravel and road options.
For a bike-oriented stay, the Trapp Family Lodge is the standout: an on-site Outdoor Center rents Giant mountain bikes (hardtail and full-suspension), Prevelo kids bikes, and offers lessons and guiding, with trail passes complimentary for overnight guests. Stoweflake Mountain Resort sits steps from the Recreation Path and partners with Pinnacle Ski & Sports for 20% off rentals.
Rentals cluster along Mountain Road: Ranch Camp is the dedicated MTB shop-and-cafe (Trek, Yeti, Ibis, Norco demos), while AJ’s Ski & Sports, Pinnacle Ski & Sports, and MountainOps cover rec-path cruisers, e-bikes, gravel, and full-suspension bikes. Peak season is roughly June through October, with fall foliage riding a highlight.
Each September the von Trapp Brewing Bierhall hosts von Trapp Brewing Oktoberfest, a Bavarian celebration of beer, food, and live music at the Trapp Family Lodge, whose surrounding trail network is a well-known mountain-biking and cross-country destination.
