Cycling in The Dalles

Best season: April–October

The Dalles anchors the drier, sunnier eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge, where the forested cliffs give way to golden wheat hills and cherry orchards. The riding is genuinely varied: shiny tarmac on the Historic Columbia River Highway toward Mosier (including a 4.5-mile car-free State Trail segment with two tunnels and the Rowena Loops vista), and some of Oregon’s best gravel climbing straight up into the palouse hills — Dalles Mountain Road across the river on the Washington side is a local classic. The town’s race is the New Dalles Omnium, a two-day OBRA Championship road race and time trial set for June 13–14, 2026; it succeeds the retired Cherry Blossom Cycling Classic and moved to Gorge terrain east of town after the 2025 Rowena Fire closed the historic crest.

For lodging, the Celilo Inn is the standout for cyclists — perched on a bluff above the Columbia with sweeping Gorge views, it is widely cited as offering complimentary mountain bikes for guests to explore the surrounding orchards and historic highways. Cousins’ Country Inn is a comfortable, biker-welcoming alternative with an on-site restaurant.

Rentals in The Dalles are genuinely thin. The town’s shops — SPR Bicycle Shop on Washington Street and T & Nae’s Cycles — are geared toward sales and repair rather than a dependable rental fleet, so confirm availability before counting on a rental. The Gorge’s main rental hubs are nearby in Hood River (which we cover separately) and Cascade Locks, where Bike the Gorge rents e-bikes, cruisers and mountain bikes; many visitors rent there and drive the short distance to ride from The Dalles.

In April The Dalles marks its orchard heritage with the Northwest Cherry Festival, a downtown weekend of parades, a classic car show, food, and a 10K timed to the region’s cherry harvest.
