Cycling in Truckee
Best season: June–October
Truckee sits at 5,800 feet on the north side of Lake Tahoe, surrounded by long descents, alpine singletrack and gravel roads. Classic rides like Big Chief and the Tyrolean Downhill are point-to-point routes best done with a shuttle, while the town’s paved bike paths and the Truckee River trail give easier options. The riding season is short and snow-dependent — roughly June through October — so trails are driest and highest routes clear in mid-to-late summer.
Gear is easy to source. Start Haus in Truckee rents premium carbon and aluminum mountain bikes, e-MTBs and gravel bikes (roughly $95–$145/day) and coordinates with guided-ride bookings. Bike Truckee rents electric and full-suspension mountain bikes from its downtown-area shop. For guided rides, skills clinics and trailhead shuttles, Dirt Gypsy Adventures is the local specialist and pairs with Start Haus for its 2026 rentals.
For lodging, Gravity Haus Truckee-Tahoe (formerly the Cedar House Sport Hotel) is an outdoor-focused sport hotel near downtown and the Truckee bike paths, with in-house adventure guides. Confirm the hotel’s current bike-loan or storage offering directly, as it rebranded from Cedar House.
From mid-June through early August, historic downtown closes to cars for Truckee Thursdays, a weekly street festival with live music, food, and a beer garden — there’s a bike valet, so pedaling in is encouraged.
