Cycling in Virginia Beach

Best season: April–October

Virginia Beach was built for the beach cruiser. The Virginia Beach Boardwalk carries a separated, bikes-only path along its full three miles of oceanfront, so you can pedal from 1st Street to 40th with the Atlantic on one shoulder and no pedestrians underfoot. Rental stands dot nearly every other block — Cherie’s alone runs fourteen boardwalk locations from April into fall — and several hotels put bikes in the amenity list, from a boutique spot right on the boardwalk to the grand Cavalier up on the hill, whose guests reportedly borrow from a house fleet.

When the boardwalk feels too easy, head north through the leafy North End to First Landing State Park at Cape Henry. Its flat Cape Henry Trail rolls about 7.5 shaded miles through salt marsh, cypress lowlands, and maritime forest — a genuinely different ride ten minutes from the surf shops. Guided fat-tire eco-tours cover exactly this boardwalk-to-forest route if you’d rather follow a local.

Bayfront option: the Delta Waterfront Suites on Chesapeake Bay sits about a mile from the park’s trailhead and reportedly rents bikes to guests, making it the quieter base for riders who care more about trail miles than boardwalk scenes.

The season runs April through fall, matching the rental stands. Summer mornings are best — afternoon boardwalk crowds can bring bike restrictions at peak hours, so ride early and swim later.
