Cycling in Walla Walla

Best season: April–October (long, dry inland season; the Walla Walla Grit runs in mid-September)

Walla Walla sits in a wide valley spiderwebbed with quiet gravel roads that climb from the wheat and wine flats into the Blue Mountain foothills, putting riders onto gravel within minutes of downtown. The standout is the roughly 40-mile Scenic Loop via Russell Creek Road, with steeper Blue Mountain pitches like Cottonwood Creek for those wanting more climbing, and the valley’s mature wine tourism means it has the hospitality most gravel towns lack. The marquee event is the Walla Walla Grit, a gravel race with 45-, 65-, and 95-mile courses on gravel and vineyard terrain in the Blue Mountain foothills; after a hiatus in 2025 it returns Sunday, September 13, 2026, starting and finishing downtown. The Grit was founded by the former owners of Allegro Cyclery, and as of 2026 the Bicycle Barn is the hosting bike shop. (Note the separate Tour of Walla Walla is a road stage race, not this gravel event.)

For renting, the Bicycle Barn at 1503 E Isaacs Ave is the most clearly confirmed option: its own site states it keeps a fleet of rental bikes, including pedal-assist e-bikes, with half-day, six-hour, and full-day durations. Allegro Cyclery at 200 E Main St is a downtown shop with a gravel-and-e-bike focus that also rents (standard bikes, e-bikes, and tandems, half-day minimum), though its rental page renders dynamically and specifics are best confirmed by phone.

Cyclist-friendly lodging leans on the valley’s wine-country inns. The Courtyard by Marriott downtown is widely listed as offering complimentary bikes to borrow, and the Inn at Blackberry Creek, a wine-country B&B, is reported to lend guest bikes with helmets and locks for the short ride into town; in both cases the bike perk shows up on tourism and booking listings rather than the property’s own site, so confirm when you book.

In May, hot-air balloons lift off at dawn over Howard Tietan Park for the free Walla Walla Balloon Stampede, a decades-old spring tradition with a Friday-night Nite Glow — a fine reason to pair sunrise ballooning with a day of wine-country cycling.
