Cycling in Wichita
Best season: March–June, September–November
Kansas’s biggest city is an easy, flat riverfront ride. The Arkansas River Path runs roughly a dozen paved miles through the middle of Wichita, passing Exploration Place, the ballpark, and the Keeper of the Plains — the 44-foot steel sculpture whose pedestrian bridges are the path’s postcard moment and a handy shortcut toward Old Town’s restaurants.
Getting on a bike is simple. Bike Share ICT scatters 200-plus cruisers across 40 downtown stations, unlocked through the Movatic app for $1.50 per half hour. Heartland Bicycle in Old Town rents everything from cruisers to full-suspension mountain bikes at some of the friendliest rates anywhere, and in midsummer Wichita State’s Boats & Bikes stand rents bikes, kayaks, and paddleboards right on the river.
Downtown, the Fairfield Inn & Suites on Main Street lists free bikes for guests and sits a few blocks from the path; out by the airport, the SpringHill Suites does the same for layover riders. Both programs are aggregator-reported, so a quick call to the front desk before you count on a bike is smart.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots — summer riding is fine early in the day, but the riverbanks give little afternoon shade.
