Cycling in Williamsburg

Best season: April–June, September–October

Williamsburg sits at the eastern end of the Virginia Capital Trail, a fully paved, car-free path running about 52 miles from Jamestown to Richmond along scenic Route 5 — flat-to-rolling riding past plantations, river views, and four centuries of history. You don’t have to ride it all: the first miles out of Jamestown make a perfect out-and-back, with a trailside café and rental stop (Spoke + Art) right on the path.

The riding menu here is unusually varied. Cyclists share the low-speed Colonial Parkway between Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown, and bikes are welcome on the streets of Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area itself — pedaling past fife-and-drum parades at walking pace is the signature move.

Hotel bikes fit in nicely: Kingsmill Resort runs its own rental station with miles of internal trails above the James River, an e-bike outfit stages rentals at the Historic Powhatan resort, and the Williamsburg Lodge reportedly partners with a local rental company steps from the Historic Area. A local operator also runs guided e-bike tours on the Capital Trail and shuttles one-way riders toward Richmond.

Spring and fall are ideal — summer is hot and humid, so start early and refill bottles at the trailside stops. Weekend brunch crowds at the Jamestown end mean reserving rental bikes ahead is smart.
