Cycling in Wilmington

Best season: April–June, September–October

Delaware’s largest city is a genuinely underrated ride, and its centerpiece is the Jack A. Markell Trail — a mostly flat, roughly 5.5-mile paved path (with a long boardwalk stretch) that leaves the Wilmington Riverfront and glides along the Christina River and its marshes all the way to Historic New Castle. The colonial end of the line rewards you with cobblestone streets, the Read House & Gardens, and a tavern lunch; the Riverfront end drops you back among restaurants, a museum, and the river walk. It is flat enough for a family outing and long enough to feel like a real trip.

For a different flavor, head north to the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail, a 10.4-mile route that threads Brandywine Park, Alapocas Run State Park, and Bellevue State Park across the leafy Brandywine Valley. Most of it is wide and paved and easy to ride, though one short connector between Alapocas Run and Brandywine Park is steep and loose enough that you should simply walk your bike through it.

Wilmington makes it easy to ride without hauling a bike here. The Hyatt Place Wilmington Riverfront keeps complimentary bikes for guests right by the Markell trailhead, and the downtown Residence Inn is listed with free guest bikes as well. No hotel bike? FIN runs an app-based bike share from a Riverfront station near the Delaware Children’s Museum, and Cloud of Goods will deliver a hybrid or cruiser — helmet and lock included — straight to your hotel.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots. The Brandywine sections are shady and cool, the Riverfront marshes are humid and buggy at the height of summer, and the shoulder seasons give you the clearest, quietest miles along the water.
