Winston-Salem has quietly become one of the Southeast’s more serious road-cycling towns, anchored by the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic. Held in late May and paired with the Gears & Guitars music festival, it is one of only two UCI category 1.1 road races staged in the United States each year, combining a downtown criterium with a hilly Piedmont road race and open community rides. The 2026 edition runs Friday May 22 and Saturday May 23, with the criterium looping through downtown near Merschel Plaza. Beyond race weekend, riders find rolling road and gravel routes across the surrounding Piedmont countryside plus a paved greenway network, including the Long Branch and Salem Creek greenways and the 7-mile Salem Lake loop.

The standout bike-friendly base is the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel downtown, set inside the historic R.J. Reynolds Building. It offers guests complimentary cruiser (PUBLIC) bikes on a first-come basis and secure overnight bike storage, so race-goers and greenway riders can roll straight out the door. A block away on Fourth Street, the Hotel Indigo Winston-Salem Downtown sits right on the criterium corridor and is a practical race-weekend base within reach of downtown bikeshare stations.

For rentals, FLOWBIKES is the city’s public bikeshare, run by the nonprofit National Cycling Center with roughly 100 bikes across 22 stations covering downtown, the Muddy Creek and Salem Creek greenways, and Salem Lake. For e-bikes and guided rides, Triad Eco Adventures (a Pedego dealer) rents pedal-assist bikes and runs guided e-bike tours of downtown, Old Salem, and Reynolda from its shop on YWCA Way. Spring and fall are the prime seasons, avoiding the humid depths of Piedmont summer.

Winston-Salem’s marquee annual event is the RiverRun International Film Festival each April, an Academy Award-qualifying festival that screens roughly 175 films across venues around downtown.
