Cycling in Winter Park

Best season: Mid-June–late September

Winter Park, an hour or so west of Denver in the Fraser Valley, is Colorado’s downhill-park heavyweight. Trestle Bike Park at Winter Park Resort bills itself as the largest full-service lift-served downhill park in the country, with more than 40 miles of trail dropping 1,810 feet from the 10,810-foot top of the Olympia Lift. Winter Park is the only Colorado resort that runs two dedicated downhill-MTB lifts, and the terrain spans smooth beginner flow to steep, technical expert and pro lines. The park opens in mid-June and runs into late September, with 10am lift service that stretches to 6:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Trestle’s own bike shop runs one of the largest rental fleets in North America, and the packages are refreshingly complete: a Transition TR11 or a premium Pivot, Propain or Trek comes with a full-face Rampage helmet, Fox chest protector, and elbow, knee and shin pads — the whole armor kit included. You can bolt a discounted lift ticket onto any rental, and junior packages cover riders 12 and under. Booking a day ahead locks in the lower prebook rates.

For lodging, the ski-in/bike-in Zephyr Mountain Lodge sits about 110 feet from the gondola with on-site bike storage; the Vintage Hotel is a short walk or Cabriolet ride away, and Iron Horse offers base-area condos. All three qualify for the resort’s Trestle Trailside Stays lodging discount, so it pays to book the room and the bike together.

Each July the Winter Park Jazz Festival brings two days of jazz, R&B, and soul to the open-air Rendezvous Event Center — a mountain-town weekend that pairs well with the resort’s lift-served trails.
