Cycling in Winthrop

Best season: May–October

Winthrop sits at the eastern gateway to the North Cascades, a false-fronted Old-West town that has quietly become one of Washington’s best mountain-bike bases. The marquee riding is the Sun Mountain trail system — 40-plus miles of flowy single and double track rolling through pine forest above the valley — backed by bigger days like Buck Mountain and the alpine epic Angels Staircase once the high country melts out in midsummer.

The valley suits a wide range of riders. Sun Mountain’s network is friendly to strong beginners and families, while the surrounding Forest Service singletrack gives experienced riders week-long variety. Fourteen miles up-valley, the tiny hamlet of Mazama is the quieter trailhead hub.

Bikes are easy to come by without hauling your own: Sun Mountain Lodge rents e-bikes and hardtails from its on-site Adventures Shop with trails out the door, a riverside lodge in town lends free cruisers for the pedal across the footbridge into downtown, and Winthrop’s full-service bike shop rents everything from kids’ bikes to carbon e-mountain bikes, with a Mazama outpost covering the upper valley.

Aim for May through October. Valley trails dry out first; save the high alpine routes for July onward, and expect hot, exposed afternoons in midsummer — start early and carry water.
